Sharon Holt, author and publisher of the award-winning Te Reo Singalong series of children’s picture books, is coming to the Gore district.
She will present Maori singalong puppet shows for children in Lumsden, Mataura and Gore as well as a professional development session in Gore.
Southern Reap early childhood co-ordinator Maree Day said Holt’s 13 books were loved by children and teachers. “An enriched language environment is paramount for brain development in early years,” Mrs Day said.
Having a puppet show singalong made learning Maori fun and engaging for children, she said.
“It brings Sharon’s books alive.” It was also important for children to hear Maori spoken outside the classroom as well as for “adults to be positive role models for children”.
The show will be interactive so children can engage in Te Reo Maori. Holt’s books will also be available to buy at the shows. The professional development session is open to all adults, not just teachers, and will feature her five-step method to correct pronunciation in Maori.
The session would help people be more confident when speaking Maori, Mrs Day said.
“It is important to keep the language alive,” she said. “Sharon is a great presenter.”
The Lumsden show is on March 7 at 2pm in the Senior Citizens Rooms.
The Mataura show is on March 9 at 10am at the Mataura Community Centre.
The Gore show is on March 9 at 1.30pm in the James Cumming Wing.
The professional development session will be held on March 9 at 7pm at Gore Kids Hub and will cost $20 per person.
