A year 10 Gore High School pupil recently had a poem she wrote published in Southland magazine The Life. The poem Nothing Can Stay Hidden For Long was written by Olivia Christie for an English assessment. The brief was to create a murder mysterythemed poem.Half of the poem was written by American high school pupils. Olivia added the second half and changed what she did not like. Her English teacher submitted the poem to the magazine to compete with other poems for the chance to be published. ‘‘Well my English teacher submitted it and I didn’t know and then she told me I’d won,’’ Olivia said. Olivia said she liked poetry because it was a way of expressing ideas. ‘‘I like any type of poetry, I’ve been working on a rhyme though, rhymes can be quite interesting.’’ She said creative writing was something she would always do as a hobby but was interested in all aspects of school, particularly science. She was working on a poem from her own ideas about bullying. ‘‘It compares a person to fireworks and how emotions are contained and then lit,’’ Olivia said.
