“Writers in the Round” nights are to be added to the New Zealand Songwriters Trust portfolio of events.
Trust chairwoman Barbara Mackay said in a letter of application for funding to the Mataura Licensing Trust, a night hosted at the Thomas Green Public House and Dining Room, alongside the New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards events this year, was very successful.
That success triggered discussions resulting in the songwriters trust deciding to host quarterly Writers in the Round events at the venue.
“We are very privileged to host this national event in Gore and sincerely acknowledge this is due to your [the MLT’s] generous ongoing support,” Mrs Mackay said in the letter.
Trustee Jeff Rea said the trust wanted to encourage and foster songwriters and the idea of holding the Writers in the Round nights was one way of doing that.
No firm plans had been made yet, Mr Rea said.
It was hoped guest songwriters could be secured for the nights, he said.
The event would involve songwriters performing their own compositions.
Mr Rea had attended Writers in the Round sessions in the United States.
“They’re quite popular nights,” he said.
The sessions gave songwriters a forum to perform their own material.
The Thomas Green would be lovely place to host the sessions.
“I think it will be a win-win for both sides,” he said.
The MLT has granted the songwriters trust $10,000 towards hosting its events next year, including the MLT Songwriting Awards which are combined with the New Zealand Country Music Awards and MLT Songwriting Seminar.
The MLT has granted the trust $10,000 annually for several years.
