Past principal performers from the West End show Les Miserables are preparing to dazzle Gore with their musical performance Beyond the Barricade next month.

Andy Reiss, David Fawcett, Katie Leeming and Julie-Alanah Brighten will perform a variety of songs from musicals at the St James Theatre on Wednesday, October 12.

Reiss said Beyond the Barricade was created while he and Fawcett were performing in Les Miserables.

Seventeen years later the group was still performing, Reiss said. He had played several roles in Les Miserables, including Jean Valjean; Fawcett also played Jean Valjean; and Leeming played the role of Eponine.

Brighten played the lead role of Belle in the West End production of Beauty and the Beast.

Beyond the Barricade features four singers and an ensemble of 30 musicians.

Reiss said it was a challenge to replicate the sound of the musical with four singers.

All of the performances will be performed live.

“We’re looking forward to it very much. It’s very exciting.”

The company was not used to performing about six shows in a week. They usually performed three shows a week while they were in the United Kingdom.

The 25 New Zealand shows will be performed over four weeks.

“The good thing about being here is getting to see the North Island and the South Island. There won’t be many places we haven’t seen.”

Beyond the Barricade will comprise songs from a selection of musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, Lion King, Mamma Mia and Jesus Christ Superstar with the finale featuring a song from Les Miserables.
