Meals on Wheels drivers needed over Christmas

The Gore Welfare League is calling for a practical outpouring of festive spirit.
It needs more organisations or individuals to join its list of volunteers who deliver Meals on Wheels over the Christmas period. The welfare league, which runs the Meals on Wheel service, was particularly short of volunteers at that time, meals co-ordinator Greta Miller said.
Idea Services, which normally supplied drivers and deliveries, went on holiday over Christmas, she said.  The meals were prepared at Heartland Hotel Croydon and drivers picked up the meals from the hotel and delivered them to recipients.
Heartland Hotel Croydon acting head chef Jessica O’Neill said between 50 and 60 meals were prepared daily from Monday to Friday. There were three runs a day, Mrs Miller said.
She paid tribute to Idea Services, which delivered meals every day of the week all year except for public holidays and the Christmas break “They do very well.” .
Clubs and other organisations also took turns at delivering the meals, she said.
Mrs Miller said people involved in the service were very generous with their time.
“People are very happy to do it,” she said.
The extra people were needed for a three-week period from Christmas.
It would take about an hour a day to deliver meals, she said.
