Calling Southland’s budding artists

Riversdale Arts is calling for budding artists to enter the inaugural Emerging Artist Award.
Riversdale Arts is sponsoring the award, which is being held in conjunction with its 43rd Mixed Media Exhibition in July.
President Christine O’Connor said the longstanding exhibition was very successful.
Artists under the age of 25 on July 22 who are residents of Southland are eligible to enter a two- or three-dimensional artwork in the award.
The emerging artist award was the organisation’s way of providing inspiration and a forum for young Southland talent, Mrs O’Connor said.
Riversdale Arts traditionally offered a scholarship. However, this year it decided to offer a new initiative, she said.
‘‘We thought we’d try this and attract more young people to this exhibition.’’
Ten entries in the award would be chosen by Eastern Southland Gallery curator Jim Geddes for the competition, Mrs O’Connor said.
The winner would be announced on the exhibition’s opening night and would receive a prize of $1000.
The exhibition attracted artists from throughout New Zealand, which made it a high-quality event. However, organisers were keen to have more interaction with artists in Southland, Mrs O’Connor said.
The exhibition attracted good numbers of spectators from far and wide.
However, a survey last year revealed the majority of attendees were in the 50-plus age group, she said.
The organising committee was keen to attract people of all ages to the exhibition, Mrs O’Connor said.
