A night to celebrate the youth of Gore has been cancelled due to Covid-19.
The Gore District Youth Council’s Youth Awards were scheduled to be held at the St James Theatre on May 16, to coincide with Youth Week from May 9 to 17.
The awards have been a fixture since 2013 and up to 12 awards are presented on the night, to recognise the important work the youth do in the community.
Chairwoman Emily Chamberlain (17) was gutted the awards were cancelled, but knew it was the right decision.
“It’s really unfortunate, with it being my last year on the council,” Emily said.
“It’s what we’ve been leading up to but keeping everyone safe and prioritising them and their health is really important.”
“It definitely sucks but as long as everyone is safe, the Youth Council understands.”
The council had been looking for a host since last year’s Youth Awards in March.
“We’ve been working since last year on small things but it’s been leading up more since we were sworn in earlier this year.”
Other activities planned for Youth Week were cancelled, including a movie night, gaming events and church and youth group activities, she said.
Youth Council meetings were suspended until the end of May and would be re-evaluated from then.
“We’ve got that many representatives from the different areas that everyone lives in and it’s important we keep our youth safe.”
School representatives would keep in touch and support other pupils during this time, she said.
