A Balfour School pupil is excited after a poem she wrote during class was published in a New Zealand journal this week.
Gemma Bulleid (10) had her poem “Korowai” featured in Toitoi – a journal for young writers and artists, which was released on Monday.
Gemma’s poem was based on a Maori feather cloak, which was a class study for Matariki this year.
Balfour residents Helen Wilson and Gaylene Tepu brought two cloaks to show the school.
Gemma’s teacher Joy Knight had her class write a poem about the cloaks.
“We did a lot of editing,” Gemma said.
Ms Knight said to Gemma she really liked the poem and asked to submit it to the Toitoi journal.
Gemma said she was really excited, as she had always wanted work published.
The year 5 pupil enjoyed writing.
“I’ve only just started to get the hang of it [writing] because I’ve just started songwriting too,” she said.
Gemma wrote a song based on the Arrowtown Ski Camp the school attended this year.
The poem was written when Gemma was 9.
