“It’s funny” was Emily Milne’s reaction to her father having his beard shaved off.

The 3-year-old watched in awe as her father, Hamish Milne, had his beard shaved for a cause earlier this week.

Mr Milne was talked into raising money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand by losing his beard.

“A friend of ours shaved his mullet he had for years, then I got talked into it,” the Gore man said.

The Kelso Contracting staff member had his beard for nearly four years and his children Emily and Paisley (5 months) had never seen him without facial hair.

He believed it would not only be Emily who would miss the beard, but also Paisley.

“She gets her hands all tangled in it,” he said.

It had had a few trims during the four years.

“I had no intention of ever shaving it, to be fair.”

“It gets caught in zips and things in the winter.”

He thought it might be a bit draughty without the beard.

Mr Milne set a target of $500 in the Shave for a Cure campaign but said “we’ve exceeded it – it’s $600 at the moment”.
