Teams from 17 Southland schools gathered at Longford Intermediate School in Gore last week for the region’s Kids’ Lit Quiz heat.
Scorer Cathrina Lynch said there were 32 teams in total.
Southland Girls’ High School’s team 1 came first with 69 points, gaining a spot in the national final in Wellington.
James Hargest College’s team 3 came second on 65 points and Blue Mountain College’s team 2 was a close third on 64.5 points.
Mrs Lynch said the event went “fabulously”.
Quizmaster Wayne Mills travelled to 11 English-speaking countries to run the Kids’ Lit Quiz, she said.
“The kids love him,” she said.
The team that won the national final would travel to Canada to compete in the world final.
St Theresa’s School’s team 1 was the top-scoring primary school team.
“The children’s interest was high and sustained by money prizes, which individuals could win between the rounds,” Mrs Lynch said.
