Gore resident Duncan Graham and Mac leave the supermarket on Monday with their groceries.

Mr Graham said 11-year-old Mac was in the habit of selecting a grocery item to carry home.

“He’ll take bread out, he’ll take what he chooses.

“Even with the meat he just takes it home, drops it on his mat and then waits for a reward,” Mr Graham said.

“He’ll put it down when he feels like it.”

On the day the springer spaniel had chosen a leek to carry home, a police officer had been nearby and remarked that the dog should be charged with taking a leak in a public place.

Mr Duncan and his wife Lynda had moved to Gore about a year ago after living in Christchurch for 36 years.

They were enjoying living in the South.
