Gore District Council parks and recreation manager Keith McRobie (left) and Mataura Community Board chairman Alan Taylor check out the new location for the Mataura roll of honour plaque.
The brass plaque, which lists those who died in the two world wars, was previously located at the town’s former swimming pool. However, it was recently moved to the war memorial in River St.
Mr McRobie said the plaque had had “pride of place” inside the door of the pool building.
“For a small community like Mataura it’s a pretty significant list.”
The war memorial was the “ideal spot” for the plaque. There were two wooden boards which contained the entire list of men and women who served their country. These would be cleaned up and placed inside the council’s service centre, he said.
Mr Taylor said the chlorine atmosphere had affected the surface of the plaque but it had now been cleaned.
“It’s a good result to have [the plaque] here and have it preserved.”
