Winning the Best Southland Designer Award at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards was a “special moment” for Una Adams, of Tapanui.
The garment was named Our butterfly and was a tribute to her late sister, Marlene Blair.
“She died last year from bowel cancer but I promised her I would enter this year.”
Mrs Adams began to design the outfit late last year and it took about six months to put together, she said.
The material she used for the garment was a gift from her sister.
“She asked me last year whether I would enter the awards, but I told her I hadn’t been inspired. She pulled out the material which she had bought at the second-hand shop and I was instantly motivated.”
It was the material’s permanent pleats and colour which she liked the most, Mrs Adams said.
The wings displayed on the garment represented a memory she had with her sister.
“My sister and I both got tattoos of a butterfly on our ankle, so I wanted the dress to look like a butterfly.”
It was an emotional moment when she received the award, she said.
“It was sad not to have her with me, but it was a very special moment.”
