Menzies College pupil SophieLee Richardson (17) is fundraising to help fellow pupil Ethan Kitto-Smith (18) and his family.

Ethan is in Christchurch having treatment for leukaemia.

SophieLee said she wanted to raise money to help Ethan and his family while he was having treatment.

“I thought if he had his family there with him it might make him feel better,” she said.

She would be running two quiz nights, one on Saturday and one on October 21, at Grace Church in Gore, she said.

“The money raised will be divided: half will go to Ethan Kitto-Smith and family as he fights leukaemia, and the other half will go to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.”

Ethan’s half would be donated to the Ethan’s Journey Givealittle page, she said. That money would help Ethan and his mother, Sharon, while they are away.

She knew Ethan through her friends and decided to help after seeing his social media page.

She decided to hold quiz nights because it was something she had been involved in before, but this was the first time she had done most of the organising herself, she said.

“Finding questions was quite difficult because I had to make sure they weren’t too easy or difficult.”

She also had trouble finding businesses to donate raffle prizes, she said.

She had also organised a crazy hair day at Menzies College, where she would shave her head. The money from that day would go towards petrol and supermarket vouchers for the family.
