Grass karts built by 10 pupils at the Hokonui Tertiary High School will be put to the test during a grass kart race next week.
Three teams from the school will compete with teams from Northern Southland College, Southland Boys’ High School and Otago Polytechnic on Saturday, October 15, in the St Peter’s College grounds starting at 10.30am. Judging of karts will be held at 8.30am.
The tertiary high school attracts pupils from Blue Mountain College, Gore High School, St Peter’s College and Fiordland College.
Hokonui Tertiary High School automotive engineering tutor Craig Popham said the grass karts had been made in engineering classes for the past 10 years.
The year 12 and 13 pupils had spent 70 to 80 hours on their karts, which had to be dismantled for painting.
Each kart had its own unique style and one group had used a shopping trolley.
The pupils enjoyed making the karts, which had a top speed of 40kmh, Mr Popham said.
