Community achievements were celebrated at the Gore District Community Awards on Friday.

Organiser of the Student Volunteer Army and social entrepreneur Sam Johnson was the guest speaker for the night.

He talked about organising the Student Volunteer Army in the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes. Everyone wanted to help but not everyone knew how.

“A lot of them had never used a wheelbarrow before, Mr Johnson said.

“It wasn’t the shovelling of the silt that mattered – it was everyone coming together.”

Two civic awards were also given out on Friday.

One was given to Dave Devenport, of Gore, who started the Red Cross Community Transport Service to help people travel to and from medical appointments.

The other went to Brian and Elaine Kelly, who found a way to distribute apples that could not be exported to people who needed them in the Gore community.

Gore Major Tracy Hicks commended all the award winners on their efforts to help the community.
