Residents adorn hats for race day

The men and women of Albany House put on their finest hats on Tuesday to watch the New Zealand Trotting Cup on television.

Albany House events co-ordinator Ross Ramsay said the residents of the rest-home created their own hats the day before.

He said Gore resident Verna Wilson came in to show the residents how to use flowers and decorations to make the hats.

As well as creating an array of bright and colourful hats, the residents took part in a sweepstake.

“They all got involved with the one dollar per head sweepstake, they all contributed,” he said.

“I thought they all looked pretty glorious in their hats.”

They had all picked two names of horses out of a hat, before watching the race on television, Mr Ramsay said.

He said overall the residents had been pretty excited about the race day.

“Our [sweepstake] winner seemed to be very happy.”

The winner of the 2017 New Zealand Trotting Cup was Lazarus, a repeat winner from last year.
