Theatre wins result of ‘big team effort’

Members of the Gore Musical Theatre society are “ecstatic” after two wins at the Otago Southland Theatre Awards on Saturday.

The society won awards for best wardrobe and best choreography for its 2021 production of Chicago

Director Stephanie Burke said the society got together at the St James Theatre to watch a livestream of the event, which was now in its eighth year.

Nikoia McKelvie had choreographed shows for Gore Musical Theatre for years and the award was well deserved, Ms Burke said.

“It’s been a long time coming. She’s just amazing.

“We were really excited to receive the top nod for our wardrobe as well.”

The costumes were different from what was traditionally expected from a production of Chicago, she said.

Chicago is more well known for very revealing costumes.

“I really have a passion for the 1920s so I wanted to go down the flapper dresses, the glamour.

“We had to actually import a lot of the dresses.”

It was a big team effort, she said.

“We compete against large societies who have very big budgets, so when you pull out a win it’s really exciting.”
