Gore residents will be able to let their feet do the talking in support of the people of Ukraine.

Gore woman Jenny Williams is organising a “Walk with Ukraine” fundraiser for next week.

Mrs Williams said the people of Ukraine were in many people’s hearts at the moment.

She was proud of the way people throughout the world had responded.

“Sometimes the world lets disasters pass by them but everybody’s been touched by it.

“I certainly have more than normal.”

There was a limit to what New Zealanders could do from this far away, she said.

“We can certainly do a walk and a fundraiser.”

One way to enhance mental health was to do something for someone else so taking part in the walk would help people, she said.

“It’s a win-win.”

It was also a way of identifying with the Ukrainian people, many of whom were escaping on foot.

“They are walking in the freezing cold.”

The walk will leave Calvin Community Church at 6.30pm on April 8 and will also finish there.

“People can enter and exit the walk anywhere.

“You can light a candle at the end if you would like.”

If the weather was miserable the walk would be postponed until Saturday.

People could give on the day or online through the Tearfund website, she said.

People do not need a vaccine pass to take part but will need to stay in groups of fewer than 25.
