Youngsters learn about fire safety

Making sure Elsie St Kindergarten pupils are well versed in the basic principles of fire safety has been a prime focus for the organisation.
Elsie St Kindergarten head teacher Alison Brown said the kindergarten had undertaken an All About Me programme.
‘‘It’s empowering children to know what to do in the case of an emergency,’’ Mrs Brown said.
The programme gave pupils hints on safe people to talk to, and aimed to build self-esteem and selfconfidence.
The kindergarten held fire and earthquake drills once a month, which also emphasised the safety messages, she said.
Pukerau Volunteer Fire Brigade volunteers Dave Den Hertog and Julie Byars reinforced firesafety messages during two sessions, the last on Friday.
Mr Den Hertog said the volunteers talked to the pupils about fire safety as well as taking them through a couple of fire drills.
The volunteers emphasised the get down, get low, get out and stay out fire messages, Mr Den Hertog said.
Mrs Byars put on the breathing apparatus used in fighting fires so pupils could become familiar with it and not be afraid.latest RunningAir Jordan
