Gore Youth Council members and volunteers headed along River Tce picking up rubbish from the Mataura River bank on Friday.

Gore District Youth Council co-ordinator Nicole Parry said the youth council wanted to carry out a clean-up for Environment Week.

“I think it was a nice, easy thing to do together that would have a positive impact,” Miss Parry said.

Eight people headed along the river bank during the afternoon, armed with high-visibility vests and rubbish bags, she said.

Three were volunteers from the public and the others were youth council members, Miss Parry said.

“It went well. We made it all the way to Walnut Grove in an hour.”

She was disappointed to find so much rubbish.

“I was hoping we wouldn’t find much but we filled quite a few bags.

“There were lots of bottles and pie packets.”

It was a great way for the youth council to help the environment, Miss Parry said.

“It was good to tidy things up before it gets into the waterways.”

She was also pleased the weather remained fine.

“The weather held off. I was worried it was going to rain.”
