The Hokonui Militaires Miss Hokonui competition on August 13 will give Gore men their chance to shine on the catwalk.
Hokonui Militaires team manager Mel Cupit said this year’s competition would be bigger and better.
Drag diva Miss Buck Wheat will come from Auckland to open the show before hosting the event with Jonny Turner, of Hokonui Radio.
Cupit said Miss Buckwheat would add to what was already an entertaining night.
‘‘It is the third year of the fundraiser and it is getting bigger and better every year to the extent Miss Buck Wheat slashed her fee to come down for the cause,’’ Cupit said.
She said there would be opportunities throughout the night to get photos and meet and greet the drag diva.
Cupit said the night was a beauty pageant with a twist, taking local men out of their comfort zones to compete for the Miss Hokonui title.
‘‘The men have to sort out their outfits, an evening wear and a swimwear, while we will help with their make-up. They then take to the runway used for the Hokonui Fashion and Design Awards,’’ she said.
She said every year the event drew different men and there could be some well-known people among them.
‘‘We hope to get a few members of the community down the runway. Hopefully they embrace the chance and have a bit of fun with the opportunity to let loose.’’
Cupit said they tried to make the show as professional as possible, with a light and sound set-up to resemble that ofpageants.
‘‘There will be great music and lights to dance under and get the men strutting their stuff.’’
The night is for a good cause.
Marching season has just started and the Hokonui Militaires team has a trip to Nelson for the South Island Championships to fundraise for.
All money raised would go directly towards paying for their travel to Nelson.
She said the night was ideal for an R18 night among friends or for midwinter work dos.
‘‘In the past we have had people walk away and said their cheeks are sore from smiling and laughing from start tofinish.’’
The event is set to take place at the James Cumming Wing on Saturday, August 13. – Miss Hokonui tickets are available for $35 from Esplins Dairy, with tables of 10 available.
