The Mossburn Volunteer Fire Brigade A team returned home with their ninth consecutive win at the Otago Southland Provincial Fire Brigade Waterways competition earlier this month.
The team, made up of senior station officer Jeff Manson and Stephen Trusler, beat seven teams at the competition held in Mosgiel.
Mossburn B members Oliver Trusler, Ash Shearer and Zac Manson came third at the competition.
Trusler said the pair were “absolutely rapt” to have won for the ninth time.
“A lot of training and hard work goes into these competitions. We train twice a week, sometimes three, so it’s a big time commitment.
“We’re going for win number 10 now,” Trusler said.
The team completed a variety of tasks at the competition including hose running, using pumps and fire obstacles.
Trusler and Manson had been competing in contests together for 24 years.
“We’ve been competing together since 1995. I’d put our wins down to our experience really.”
They will now build up to the United Fire Brigade Association National Waterways Challenge, in Wainuiomata, on March 1.
“We have about seven competitions a year to lead in – our focus shifts to nationals now so there will be a lot of fire training runs and practices going into the next bit.”
