The Gore Gauntlet CrossFit competition at the Hokonui Pavilion last Saturday drew a big crowd.
Organiser and Gore CrossFit trainer Carmen McCall estimated 300 to 400 people came to watch the 65 competitors from Southland and Otago gyms.
‘‘We are just so happy with the amount of interest there was in the competition . . . We didn’t expect the sheer volume of spectators who came through,’’ McCall said.
Participants either competed in the RX section, where they were set weights by top-end athletes; or in the Scaled section, where they used reduced weights.
In the men’s RX section Jeff Leckie, of Uncut CrossFit in Dunedin, won the competition.
Lisa Franz, of Remarkables CrossFit, finished first in the women’s RX section.
One of the more impressive efforts of the day came from 53-year-old Michelle Bruce, of Alexandra Functional Strength and Fitness, who finished first in the women’s Scaled event.
Lewis Latham won the men’s Scaled section.
Gore CrossFit’s Keeley McGuigan came first in the teen female division.
