Fred Sutherland has recently been awarded a Gore RSA Bowling Club life membership.

Sutherland received the award at the club’s annual meeting on June 11.

He has been a member since 1992.

During that time, he was secretary from 1995-2000 and became junior vice-president in 2001 and senior vice-president in 2003.

He was president of the club in 2004 and 2005 and became greenkeeper in 2004, staying on till 2012.

“When you’re a greenkeeper you spend almost all of your time on the green, making it perfect,” he said.

Sutherland said he was not expecting to get the award but was delighted when he did.

“I was humbled in receiving it and take it as an honour.

“I like getting things done. I don’t really worry about awards and stuff, so the award came as a surprise.”

Gore RSA Bowling Club president Dan Fiveash said the club had five life members, including Fred.

“Fred is a well-known bowler and member of the district who has really contributed over the years, especially towards our club,” he said.

Throughout Sutherland’s bowling career he has received five titles: one in pairs and two each in fours and triples.
