The teams met at the Eastern Southland Hockey Turf in Gore. Although the final score was convincing, it came after a slow start from the dominant team.

So far this season Southern has won one game, against Collegiate, while Mataura remains undefeated.

The first half of the match remained scoreless as the teams went back and forth up the turf.

Southern put up a tough fight and while the majority of the half was played in its defensive circle, it managed to fend off the attacks off when it needed.

The Mataura team has played together for several years, and attackers Dayna Holland and Celia Dickie made a skilled duo.

After coach Robert Dickie’s halftime talk the Mataura team regrouped and ran back on to the turf fired up.

This started a domino effect for the strong Mataura team, which dominated from then on.

Southern did not give up but the pressure created mistakes, resulting in the Mataura being awarded multiple penalty corners.

Mataura Golden will come up against Riversdale at the Eastern Southland Hockey Turf in Gore on Friday, starting at 8pm.
