Otago prevails in ‘good country rugby’

Southland Country team put up a tough fight against Otago Country on Wednesday in Waikaia.

Otago Country won the annual meeting 19-10, regardless of Southland’s relentless defence.

Otago Country did not wait long before making the first move, scoring the first try within the first minute, which was converted to make the score 7-0.

Southland Country did not let this get to it and answered with tries from fullback Mike RobinsonMedlicottwas over.

Otago Country responded with another try, making the score 12-10 at halftime.

With Southland Country on defence for a good portion of the second half, Otago Country managed to score again and followed it up with a conversion, sealing the deal 19-10.Southland Country manager Marc Robertsonstill did well regardless of the loss.

“People have to remember they have only trained together three times,” he said.

“It was a good game from each side and it really could have gone either way.

“It was a great game with a good crowd and venue too; it was just really good country rugby.”

Robertson said Southland Country players would now have time to focus on their club rugby until the next game against Canterbury Country, on August 12 in Wyndham.
