Social spinoff in getting fit

People will get the chance to whip themselves into shape with their colleagues during the Workplace Challenge.

Sport Southland Eastern Southland community sports adviser Martin Mackereth said the challenge started seven years ago to encourage people to get fit for summer.

“It’s a great way to work out in the lead-up to Christmas.”

During November, people gather points for taking part in physical activity.

The challenge could also be a team-building exercise, he said.

“There is a huge social spinoff. It’s a way to build relationships with the people you work with.”

Both Gore Hospital and the Gore District Council staff did well last year, he said.

“They set up a squash league.

“They got a healthy rivalry going.”

A number of challenges would run throughout the month, in which people could gain bonus points by taking part, Mr Mackereth said.

They would be held in Invercargill and Gore and would include activities like aqua aerobics, he said.

“People wouldn’t know how many extra points they would get until they turned up.”

He wanted people to experience different physical activities.

“It encourages people to try something new.”
