Jared Stark, of Waikoikoi, played in the New Zealand men’s and mixed teams netball tournament in Invercargill last month.
Stark said he played for a social netball league in Tapanui on Friday nights and a team-mate who played for Southland suggested he head along to the selection meeting.
” .. there was heaps of people [at the selections] so we were lucky enough to have two teams,” Stark said.
“It’s good fun and it was a good team,” he said.
The team finished out of the places but he still enjoyed himself.
“It was a great tournament. We weren’t really meant to win anything – our team had pretty much only been playing for about six months.
“We did manage to give some big teams a bit of a scare, which made them play better.”
“When the netball is competitive its speed is so much faster and really [at] that next level.”
Stark said he would keep playing netball next season and was thinking about entering the national tournament again.
“The next tournament is up in the North Island .. we would have to fundraise.
“This year we fundraised – there was a garage sale, we moved stuff and did some tailing.”
To anybody considering giving it go, Stark said it was a great form of exercise and an “awesome” way to meet new people.
