Gore High School pupil Reece Holz (15) had his first boxing bout in the weekend, along with his first win.

Reece stepped into the ring against more experienced boxer Rawiri Tipuna, of Invercargill, in an under-63kg bout.

“He had boxed in the ring before .. I hadn’t,” he said.

Overall, Reece was pretty “stoked with his win” and said he could not wait to get back in the ring.

“I knew I wanted to win but if I didn’t win, I wouldn’t have been disappointed,” he said.

He said that before stepping into the ring, he trained hard with his coach, Russell Newton, of the Gore Boxing Club.

Reece, who has been boxing for almost two years, said the aspect that really got him was his nerves.

“Aaron [Lay] talked to me before the fight and gave me some advice .. my mates were there watching me too, which was cool,” he said.

He was pretty happy to finally step into the ring.

“I started pre-season rugby last year. Me and a few mates joined a while back to help with rugby. I just sort of stuck at it.

“It’s really good for fitness and it also doesn’t clash with my rugby.

“It really does get you a lot fitter.

“Get in there and give it a go.”

For now, Reece said he would continue to train while he waited to be matched in another bout.

His overall goal was to just stick at it.
