Winton teams take podium

The number of competitors was slightly up on previous years for the Southland Twin Rivers jet boating competition.
Seventeen competitors took part in the event held on the Mataura River on Saturday and the Oreti River on Sunday.
Winton jet boaters displayed their skill to finish first, second and third. Overall winners Ben Baxter and Michael King edged out favourites Roger Preston and Fraser Guise for the title.
Preston and Guise ended up second overall while another Winton team, Anthony Holland and Tyler Herdman, came third.
The event was organised by the Southland branch of Jet Boating New Zealand. It was the last event before the New Zealand Championships to be held throughout Canterbury and Otago in October.
Other competitors at the event came from as far afield as Nelson.
One of the event organisers, Garth McMaster, said the water was at a good level to make it challenging for the racers.
‘‘This year it was a bit different. We had three legs in the Mataura River and four shortened legs on the Oreti River on Sunday which made it more exciting for spectators,’’ McMaster said.
He said it was the most supporters at the event he had seen.
‘‘All accesses along the river were well supported and there were many people along the bank.’’
