Young footballers score MVP honours

Menzies College pupils Rhylee McGregor (14) and Summer Smith (17) have continued to up their game this year.

The pair were both selected for Southland Football teams earlier this year.

Rhylee made the 14th grade team and Summer the 17th grade team.

Both players were named most valuable player in their teams at the Southland Football prizegiving, held at the Ascot Hotel in Invercargill on November 14.

Rhylee said she was elated to be named the most valuable player in her team.

“I was not really expecting it,” Rhylee said.

Summer said the award came out of the blue for her also.

“There were so many talented girls on the team – I couldn’t believe it,” Summer said.

Summer is in her last year at Menzies College and is preparing to head to Christchurch to study at Lincoln University, where she hopes to join a football team.

Rhylee said for now she would be playing in a summer league.

Thirty-two Menzies College girls have been selected for Southland Football teams in the past three years.

Menzies College football coach and teacher Carl Lambert said he was proud of the achievement.

“The girls have done a lot of work to get us to that position – I mean, 32 players in the last three years. Four pupils have been named in the Football South team over the past two years, too.”Nike Sneakers StoreNike
