While at the Southern Field Days last week, National MP Steven Joyce announced he was considering throwing his hat in to the party leadership ring.
This week he confirmed he would put his name forward for the job.
The leadership of the National Party is up for grabs, Bill English having announced his resignation.
Mr Joyce said people he talked to at the Southern Field Days urged him to consider putting his hand up for the top job.
“I will think about it,” Mr Joyce said.
People at the field days had expressed a genuine interest in who would become the National Party’s new leader, Mr Joyce said.
The caucus will vote in a fortnight on the issue.
Mr Joyce said Mr English had given him the heads-up that he was going to resign before he announced his decision, he said.
Mr Joyce paid tribute to Mr English, saying he had been a highly influential politician.
