VENTURE VIEWS Many benefits from councils’ collaboration

Venture Southland was established in 2001 by Southland’s three local councils to undertake business, tourism, community and events for the region.
The Venture Southland model is widely promoted throughout New Zealand as an example of councils working together.
I am proud to head a team of skilled professionals who deliver a diverse range of activities that aim to achieve our mission, which is ‘‘to enhance the prosperity and quality of life of Southlanders’’.
This includes initiatives to diversify Southland’s economy, business support services, destination promotion, community development, events and conferences.
Venture Southland is able to act in the best interests of the region as a whole, rather than being confined by traditional council boundaries. Our projects impact on the whole region.
We advocate for Southland to improve internet and mobile connectivity and to ensure the fair pricing and distribution of resources such as electricity.
Among the events we facilitate is the ILT Kidzone Festival, which attracts 11,000 people.
We initiate projects that will attract both visitors and migrants to the region and, as part of this, we operate the Regional Tourism Organisation for Southland and the Invercargill i-Site.
We enjoy working alongside communities to enhance Southland’s quality of life.
All our work aligns with the expectations of Southland’s three councils.
A business plan is published annually and is freely available either on our website or by contacting us.
Through this regular column we intend to keep you updated on the projects and initiatives we’re undertaking on your behalf.
