Hokonui Celtic Pipe Band president Jeff Shanks is pleased with placings earned at the national pipe band championships.

The New Zealand and South Pacific Pipe Band Championships were held in Christchurch at the weekend and the band competed in the 4A and 4B grades.

The 4A band won the medley and were fourth out of 12 bands.

It was the best the band had performed the medley in the performing area, Mr Shanks said.

The 4B band which has a mixture of experienced and younger players were placed fourth out of eight.

The band was second in the medley and street march and third in dress.

‘‘That’s quite good for the younger ones to know they are heading the right way.’’

The 4B band played Rock Around the Clock as part of the medley which caused a stir among the other bands, Mr Shanks said.

‘‘A lot of band leaders were coming to see what it was like.

‘‘It was a talking point.’’

Hokonui Celtic was thankful for the support they received from the community, he said.

Hokonui Celtic Pipe Band will play at the Mataura RSA on Saturday night and is preparing items for its Celtic Unleashed concert which will be part of the Tussock Country Music Festival in May.
