The Southland Primary Schools Cross Country Championships was held at the Southern Field Days Waimumu site on Friday.

The event was organised by East Gore School principal Wendy Kitto and Edendale School principal David McKenzie.

Ms Kitto said 464 runners took part in the event from throughout the region, including Stewart Island.

‘‘[It was] the creme de la creme of Southland cross country [primary] athletes.’’

The track conditions were frosty underfoot at the start of the day.

‘‘As the day’s gone on it’s got a little bit softer and a little bit mucky but the kids have a great time on it.

“[It’s] definitely not as wet as other years.’’
