The Southland Cross Country Championship was held at the Southern Field Days Waimumu site in cold, wet conditions on Saturday.
The weather forecast predicted snow, but by the time the senior runners set off it was blustery and raining.
Co-ordinator Graham Hall said numbers were down because of the weather forecast, with about 67 runners competing. Runners attended from throughout Southland as well as Dunedin.
The racing was competitive, Mr Hall said.
The variety of terrain on the course meant it did not favour any particular style of runner.
‘‘There’s a mixture of hills and some mud and some trees, creeks.
‘‘It’s a crosscountry course that everyone enjoys.
‘‘We get people coming back year after year to participate.’’
Given the rain and snow overnight the course was in good condition.
The Ensign reporter Sandy Eggleston was there with her camera and video to capture the action.
