Gore’s softball team the Titans are the premier 2 Southland Softball champions.

The Titans beat Invercargill team Demons 8-6 in the final on Saturday.

Titans captain Peter Howes said it was a very good team effort.

“Everybody did their part. Pretty stoked with it.”

It was a hard-fought game, Howes said.

“Demons really took it to us.”

The Titans put runs on the scoresheet in the first innings.

“They clawed it back and then we were always one run up, so we always had a buffer. But we knew they had to bat last, so we had to get enough runs ahead just in case we made some mistakes and it worked fine for us.”

About half an hour into the game the heavens opened and rain fell for about 20 minutes which affected the game.

“We had a few mistakes, so did Demons.”

Titans player Jason Milne was player of the match.

“He batted well in the final.”

The Titans had finished the round robin in second place — two points behind the Demons.

The Titans had three losses for the season.

At the Southland Softball prizegiving Titans player Mark Payne won the golden gloves of the year award trophy.
