Organisers are celebrating the success of the inaugural invitational 10s rugby tournament.

The Advance Agriculture sponsored event was held on Saturday at the Waikaka Rugby Club.

Organiser David Rance said in the past the Pioneer club had organised a sevens tournament.

‘‘Poor turnouts dictated we had to change the format and the rugby seasons are starting earlier every year so we decided to go with a 10’s tournament, which allowed a wider range of players to be able to compete.

‘‘The response was very good from the teams we invited.’’

Three men’s teams, Pioneer, Heriot and Waikaka-Riversdale Vikings, took part, after the Waikiwi team pulled out.

Heriot won the men’s after a count up of points scored for and against.

Pioneer, Albion and Midlands had women’s teams entered and Midlands won.

There was good crowd support for the event which would be held again next year.
