Twelve Eastern Southland schools waited on their wheels for the shot of the starting gun last Tuesday at the Top Bike event at Hamilton Park in Gore. The Cycling Southland event was held for year 5-8 pupils in the area. Obstacle courses, team trials and timed races were part of the bike-themed event. Organiser Marc Prutton said he was impressed with the turnout of the event. ‘‘It’s basically just a way for kids to be active, catch up with other schools and have a bit of a race around out of school,’’ he said. He hoped it would be the start of more frequent events in future, as it had been in Central Otago and Invercargill. Evelyn Thorn was there.
